Ever wondered about that cool chess game in the reading area of the library? It actually does get played sometimes -- especially now that a missing pawn has been replaced, courtesy of FKCC student and library volunteer Abalyn, shown here trouncing library specialist Nancy Klingener in a quick game.

That wonderful chess set was made by Gloria Shaw, an adjunct instructor of sculpture at the College for years until retiring a few years ago. Gloria was the force of the Library Gallery and the madre of the art department. She is still a presence to art faculty.
If you are wondering about Gloria Shaw, she is still hanging around the library checking out books and she just patched up the pieces of the chess game and has donated a book on how to play chess. She told me that she is happy that the set is being used now more than ever.
